Promotional: "IME in a Jar!" - Guess how many

By: Joe Hoffend - Published February 06, 2007 at 6:04 PM EST - Writer Archive
Ever guess how many marbles are in a jar? Well now you can guess how many IMEs are in jar to win a mouse signed by Bill Gates...

Well folks, it's HERE! GotFrag is proud to present the Final Contest of the Microsoft IME 3.0 Sweepstakes. This one is for the final grand prize--a final set will be given away featuring an original IME 3.0 signed by both Bill Gates AND Steven Fisher, Sr. Industrial Designer on the original IME 3.0 (see below for pictures). The New IME 3.0 in the final set will be unsigned but will feature a custom paint job done by the Microsoft Hardware concept workshop. Read our interview with Steven Fisher.

So, how do you win? Simple, count the number of "IME 3.0's in a Jar" and submit your guess to the GotFrag user account below. The picture below shows a jar with a bunch of IME's crammed into it (all visible). All you have to do is guess how many are in the jar, get close enough to qualify and you'll be entered automatically for a chance at the mice! See below for more details.

Send a GotFrag user message to the account IME30Sweeps with the subject "IME in a Jar" by February 13th at 11:59 PM EST. Include in the message the following:

1) Your Full name
2) Your e-mail address
3) Your guess

ONE GUESS PER USER ACCOUNT. MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS WILL DISQUALIFY YOU COMPLETELY, so guess wisely. If multiple users guess the correct number, they will be entered into a pool and the winner will be randomly chosen. If no one guesses the correct number, users who guess the closest (plus or minus) will be entered into a pool and the winner will be randomly chosen. For example, if the correct number was 1000, and one user guessed 999 and another user guess 1001, they would both be entered into the pool.

Click the picture below to enlarge:

This sweepstakes begins February 6th at 12:00AM EST and runs until February 13th at 11:59 PM EST.

View the Sweepstakes Rules and Regulations

Winners will be contacted via the GotFrag Message system.

Unfortunately, only people living in the United States and Canada are eligible to win. GotFrag staff members are not eligible to win. Users are only eligible to win one prize each.

Signed by Bill Gates

The new IME 3.0

Given: The number of objects in the Jar can be infinity.
Provable: The number of objects in the Jar can not be infinity.

This is a paradox. The latter statement is proved thus:

Preface:
Representing 3-dimensional objects in only 2-dimensions allows an infinite number of objects to be obscured, relative to the observer, by at least one other object.

Theorem:
There are a finite number of IME's in the Jar.

Proof (by contradiction):
Suppose that the number of objects in a space is infinite. No object would be discernible ( or representable) from any location of the observer. This is true because a single object must be present at every possible Cartesian coordinate, including the observer's location.

Now suppose the displayed image represents an infinite number of objects. We find that the scenario described above must be satisfied, which it clearly is not.

Thus proving that the amount of IME's in the Jar is discrete.

#23, but the real numbers is an uncountably infinite set, so the jar extends indefinitely along the 3rd axis (call it Z), while only being bounded on the 1st (call it X) and 2nd (call it Y) axes. And since "... a single object must be present at every possible Cartesian coordinate...", the set set of triples X x Y x Z inside the jar is infinite (n x m x inf), this suggests an infinite amount of IMEs in the given jar.

#23, #43...

The amount of IME 3.0's in the picture can not be infinite- otherwise they could never stop adding mice to the picture. Furthermore, since we're only dealing with 2 dimensions here, any mice entirely "behind" any other mice can't be taken into consideration.
